About TED

TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design — three broad subjects that have since been expanded to include science, business, the arts and the global issues facing our world. In effect, all ideas that matter in a given discipline may be showcased on TED.

The TED Conference, held annually in Long Beach, is the heart of TED. More than a thousand people attend the event, which, sold out a year in advance, brings together the world’s most fascinating scientists, artists, entertainers, entrepreneurs, activists and academics. During four intensive, mind blowing days, fifty speakers are challenged to give the talk of their lives, in 18 minutes. These talks are complemented by many mini sessions of music, performance and comedy.

The 4-minute trailer below gives you a taste of the TED magic.

TED background

TED was first held in Monterey, California, in 1984. In the spirit of expanding ideas around the globe the annual TED Conference in Long Beach, California has expanded to include an annual TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK and this year’s TEDIndia Conference.

In addition, the TED Conference includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Program, the annual TED Prize and the new TEDx community program of which TEDxDhaka is a part.
